Mavericks’ Luka Doncic talks about his signature shoe, when he met Michael Jordan and more

Mavericks’ star Luka Doncic joined NBA on ESPN Thursday morning to discuss what Dallas needs to be true contenders, what being in the MVP conversation means to him and recalls the first time he met Michael Jordan.

Here’s what he had to say:

Answers have been edited for length and clarity.

Majority of upper echelon teams have multiple superstars, do you think that Dallas needs another All-Star to truly contend?

Luka Doncic: “No, I think we have great players on our team. There’s plenty, very underrated guys that I think should be talked about more. So I don’t think so. I think we have a great team.”

Who are those underrated guys who need a little bit more shine?

Sonic: “Number one is Dorian Finney-Smith, he’s worked really, really hard. He’s one of the best defensive guys and if he’s open he’s gonna make the shot. I’m talking about Spencer [Dinwiddie], he’s going to have a big role this year. I’m talking about Christian Woods, he’s a new player to Dallas but I think it’s gonna be huge for us.”

Last season you were called for 17 technical fouls, although two of them were ultimately rescinded. How do you plan on toeing the line of limiting technical fouls while still maintaining the level of passion that we’ve come to know you play with?

Sonic: “Yeah, another thing about me is I don’t want to lose and that’s why I’m this, off the court, totally different. But I got to control because it’s not really a bad look for me, it’s a bad look for the whole team. It don’t help my team so I got to look to my teammates, to the players and be better for them.”

Last month you unveiled your very first signature shoe the Luka Jordan ones in Paris. What was that moment like?

Sonic: “Oh, it’s unbelievable. Since the day they told me I had my shoe coming, it was a long process, but the day I could wear it finally it was it was amazing. Especially in Paris, when it was officially the launch, it just something unbelievable. Not a lot of people can say they have their own shoes. You know, I was just a kid from Sylvania who wants to play in the NBA and now I can have I have my own show with Jordan. It’s just a dream come true for me.”

When did you first meet Michael Jordan? Did you end up saying anything?

Sonic: “I met him at my first All-Star, I think it was some sort of celebration of something. I don’t know, but I was too nervous. I didn’t know what to say. I just said hi and then how are you? I think something like that. Nothing more.”

You finished in the MVP conversation last season, is that the quest this year? Not only to make it to the finals but to once again be in that conversation and possibly win MVP?

Hopefully, MVP is unbelievable. If I could be named MVP would be enormous accomplishment. I’ll be so happy, but you never know. I hope I’m in that conversation.
