After a 2-5 season in 2020, head coach Mel Tucker helped guide Michigan State to an 11-2 record and 7-2 mark in Big 10 Conference play in 2022. The expectations for this season will remain high for Tucker as he enters his third year at the helm in East Lansing, and our experts have analyzed various betting markets related to the Spartans’ 2022 season.
Let’s dive into their odds for the upcoming season and the reasoning behind our experts’ best bet for Michigan State’s win total in 2022.

2022 Michigan State football odds and latest lines
The Spartans are currently longshots to win the National Championship and carry +125000 odds of winning it all at BetMGM Sportsbook. They have a better chance of winning the Big 10 at +2500, but either scenario would be a surprise.
A $10 wager on the Spartans to win the Big 10 returns $250 of winnings, while any bettors willing to take a chance on their National Championship odds can risk $10 and profit by $1,250 if Sparty can win their first college football title since 1966. Although our experts don’t recommend a bet on either of these plays, we believe Michigan State can still have a successful season, so let’s break down the odds around their best bet.
Michigan State win total betting odds at BetMGM
In addition to the National Championship and Big 10 future markets, users can wager on a team’s win total (over/under) in the upcoming season. Michigan State’s win total is 7.5, and the over has -140 odds, while the under’s price is +115 at BetMGM Sportsbook. This means a $140 bet on the over returns $100 of winnings if MSU grabs 8 or more victories, while a $100 wager on the under profits by $115 if they win 7 or fewer games.
Now we’ll dive into Michigan State’s performance from last year, what will change in the upcoming season and why our experts think they will struggle to grab eight wins.
Michigan State Football 2021 results
Michigan State flew past its expectations for the 2021 season and finished as the No. 9 team in the final AP poll. The highlights of last season included a win over rival Michigan and taking down Pittsburgh 31-21 in the Peach Bowl.
The Spartans’ offense was the main reason for their success, and quarterback Payton Thorne threw for a school-record 27 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. Running back Kenneth Walker III ran for 1,636 yards and 18 touchdowns, however the Heisman Trophy candidate was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in this year’s NFL Draft. Although the passing game should be similar to 2021, replacing Walker may be a tough task for the Spartans, so let’s break down their schedule for next season.
Michigan State Football 2022 schedule
Michigan State exceeded its expectations in 2021, but with a win total of 7.5, Spartan fans expect another great season from Mel Tucker and company. The entire schedule is below, and MSU kicks off its season with a home opener against Western Michigan.
- Sept. 2—vs. western michigan
- Sept. 10—vs. Akron Zips
- Sept. 17 — at Washington Huskies
- Sept. 24—vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers
- Oct. 1 — at Maryland Terrapins
- Oct. 8 — vs. Ohio State Buckeyes
- Oct. 15 — vs. Wisconsin Badgers
- Oct. 29 — at Michigan Wolverines
- Nov. 5 — at Illinois Fighting Illini
- Nov. 12 — vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights
- Nov. 19 — vs. Indiana Hoosiers
- Nov. 26 — at Penn State Nittany Lions
The Spartans started last season 8-0 before falling to Purdue, and they could get out to another fast start this season. Western Michigan and Akron should be rather easy victories, while Michigan State is a -3 point favorite on FanDuel Sportsbook against Washington.
Our experts outlined their outlook for 2022 and whether the Spartans can find similar success.

Michigan State 2022 outlook
A major concern for the Spartans is their offensive line and rushing attack. Michigan State brought in running back transfers Jalen Berger (Wisconsin) and Jarek Broussard (Colorado), but there aren’t many players in the country who can replace a player of Walker’s caliber.
Additionally, their depth along the offensive line is not comparable to last season, and the Spartans lost Matt Allen, AJ Arcuri, Blake Bueter, Luke Campbell and Dan VanOpstall to graduation, in addition to Kevin Jarvis in the NFL Draft. Allen and Arcuri started all 13 games last season, and we think the entire offense will take some time to come together.
The outlook looks positive for Michigan State, but last season was truly remarkable and will be hard to replicate. Now that we’ve reviewed the upcoming season for MSU, let’s explain why our experts predict they will finish with under 7.5 wins.

Michigan State win total over/under prediction: Under 7.5 wins (+115 at BetMGM Sportsbook)
Michigan State has a tough schedule this season compared to last year, and Washington will be their first test on September 17. BetMGM Sportsbook reported that Michigan State to finish over 7.5 wins is one of their largest liabilities for the upcoming season, yet there isn’ t a single book that’s moved this total to 8. Although there is more juice to the under, we predict this is the right play.
Michigan State was 4-0 in contests decided by less than a touchdown last season, which included wins over Nebraska, Indiana, Michigan and Penn State. It’s very unlikely they’ll be able to win that many close games again this season, and even if you assume they’ll start the season 3-0 and pick up wins over Maryland (away), Illinois (away), Rutgers (home) ) and Indiana (home), they’ll need to beat either Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Penn State or Ohio State. Minnesota or Wisconsin are the most likely wins since those games are in East Lansing, but it could be ambitious for the Spartans to win either of them.
To win eight games, Michigan State would probably have to not slip up once in games they’re favored and pick up a home win over Wisconsin or Minnesota, who both have better odds to win the Big 10. Therefore, we’ll predict the Spartans will finish with under 7.5 wins in the upcoming season as our best bet.
